Books

At the present I am reading a book titled "Speeches that changed the world". It is inspiring to read speeches others have given that have changed our world. I was really challenged reading the speech "The Perils of Indifference" by Elie Wiesel.

Off to Korea

Our son just recently (January of 2009) left for Korea to teach in a small school about 45 minutes north of Seoul. We miss him but know God is going to stretch him and teach him many new things.  He will be a blessing to those he meets and his mom and I will definitely have to go over and visit him.

My Dad's Book

My father has just finished writing a book. My brother and I are trying to get it published.  It is titled "The Names of God" and dedicates one chapter each to the different names Scripture gives to God in the Old Testament.  Stay tuned and I will tell you where you can go to download it.

How can this be my 9th year at Southwestern?

Time does fly, that sure does seem to be true as I think about the past 10 years. I was sitting back in my office thinking about all the changes that have occurred at Southwestern since I have been here. Can you believe it, when I first came past this campus there was no grass out front. Here are a few of the changes I have experienced:

Basic Changes

  • Chapel: when I first came here we had chapel upstairs where all the classrooms are now (and there was no ceiling).
  • the Gym: there were no bleachers, we would sit on the floor or on small portable bleachers.
  • the New Dorm: what a wonderful addition this has brought to the school, especially Starbucks on the top floor.
  • New Sports Teams: since my children have spent time in Brasil how can there be any sport other than soccer, yea for its addition on campus.
  • new Faculty: there are too many to be so thankful for, God has blessed us richly in this category.
  • my Doctorate: I would be remiss if I did not thank the Lord for helping me through the process. I squeezed 4 years into 6 but I did finish in April of last year.

Classes I will be teaching

  • Physical Science: My emphasis is not in the physical sciences but I still love teaching this class. Recently I have become fascinated with astronomy and geology. Can there be anything better than getting paid to study the hand of God in creation?
  • Statistics: I enjoy teaching this class because I can go over how decisions are made in this world. How mathematics is used in decision making is another fascinating topic to me.
  • Educational Technology: OK, OK, I know you have heard it too many times before but I love teaching this one too. The influence of computers and the Internet on education is tremendous. I hope all my students when they come out of this class remember "Curriculum should drive technology, not technology driving curriculum.

A few books I have enjoyed reading in the last year:

  • The Prince and the Pauper: one by Mark Twain that I read as I was growing up but it was fun to get back into it as an adult. I enjoy Twains unique way of writing.
  • Our Endangered Values: by Jimmy Carter. The subtitle of this book is "America's Moral Crisis" and I think former president Carter does an admiral job in describing our condition.
  • The Code Book: by Simon Singh. I did not think that any book about cryptography could be good but this one has been an interesting read. It starts historically in Egypt and brings the reader into the present day of computer secrecy.
  • Water Follies: by Robert Glennon. This book really opened my eyes to some of the problems of groundwater pumping in the U.S. It does not sound like a good read, but trust me it is.
  • The Learning Gap: by Stevenson and Stigler. It takes a look at what these two men think we could learn in America from the Chinese and Japanese educational systems.

Verse for the semester

  • Zephaniah 3:17: The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save, he will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.
