Off to Korea

Our son recently (January of 2009) left for Korea to teach in a small school about 5 minutes from North Korea. We miss him but know God is going to stretch him and teach him many new things.  He will be a blessing to those he meets and his mom and I will definitely have to go over and visit him.  Update January 2010 - We just finished a fantastic visit with J and Siwon (his fiance).  The pictures at the top of the home page are of them, enjoy.

My Dad's Book

My father has just finished writing a book and my brother and I finally got it published.  It is titled "How Big is Your God?" and dedicates one chapter each to the different names Scripture gives to God in the Old Testament.  You can go to Amazon and buy it now, yea!!!!  In the search box put the title and my fathers name - Richard Pettitt.  I had no idea how long it would take to get this done, but we are certainly excited that it is out there now.

What is a Statistician?

Definition of a Statistician:  A statistician is one who passes as an expert on the basis of a prolific ability to produce an infinite variety of incomprehensible figures calculated with micrometric precision from the vaguest of assumptions based on debatable evidence from inconclusive data derived by persons of questionable reliability for the sole purpose of confusing an already hopelessly befuddled group of persons who never read the statistics anyway.

Actually the class is an introduction to the basic principles of statistics.  We will go through a little probability but the main goal of the class is to help you understand how statistics is used to help us make decisions.  The class is usually filled with business and behavioral study majors.  The business majors will also be taking a statistics lab course that meets immediately after the Tuesday class.  This lab focuses on how to use excel to help us in the decision making process.  The lab meets from 2:35 until 3:30.

The book we will be using this year is by Johnson and Kuby and is titled Elementary Statistics.

Statistical Humor (or lack of humor):

1. There are 3 types of statisticians: Ones who can count and ones who can not.

2.  As a biologist, a physicist, and a statistician are riding on a train through Wisconsin, they pass a herd of cows, one of which is completely white. "Oh look, there are white cows in Wisconsin," says the biologist. "You mean," says the physicist with an air of superiority, "there is at least one white cow in Wisconsin." "No," says the statistician, "there is at least one cow in Wisconsin that's white on at least one side!"

3.  What's the difference between an introverted and an extroverted statistician?  The introverted statistician stares down at his own shoes while the extroverted one stares down at your shoes.
